Tailored SMART Goals Will Keep you Profitable

Introduction - Work Pattern Upgrade

The pandemic has altered the way we perceive everything. The majority of what we did before 2020—living, working, playing, and traveling—had a big impact on how well employees conducted themselves at work. Organizations must create a brand-new atmosphere for all employees to operate in while adjusting to the new normal with highly preventative activities and social safety toward health and well-being.

“Employing people, developing their resources, utilizing/ maintaining and compensating their services in tune with the job and organizational requirements” (Armstrong, 2019)

Individual motivation is thus a valuable component of the goal of HRM in order to use HR in the organization and maintain it in the new environment. The fundamental duties of HRM cannot be carried out if the spirit of the workforce is not at the proper level.

The importance of setting goals increases when it comes to inspiring the proper number of workers, as this level of support may be needed to accomplish the shared goal. According to a study, Students can boost performance by 10% to 25% with effective goal-setting(WSU,2019).

"Goal-setting theory (Locke & Latham, 1990) is one of the most influential and practical theories of motivation. In fact, in a survey of organizational behavior scholars, it has been rated as the most important (out of 73 theories) (Miner, 2003). The theory has been supported in over 1,000 studies with employees ranging from blue-collar workers to research-and-development employees, and there is strong support that setting goals is related to performance improvements (Ivancevich & McMahon, 1982; Latham & Locke, 2006; Umstot, Bell, & Mitchell, 1976). According to one estimate, goal setting improves performance at least 10%–25% (Pritchard et al., 1988). Based on this evidence, thousands of companies around the world are using goal setting in some form, including Coca Cola Company, PricewaterhouseCoopers International Ltd., Nike Inc., Intel Corporation, and Microsoft Corporation, to name a few."

How a GOAL looks like - POV

Goals should be SMART, according to the notion itself. A person who is working with alignment feels better at ease when the goal is Detailed, Measurable, Aggressive, Realistic, and Time-bound. But will merely having a SMART aim matter? With the help of this dialogue, we're attempting to determine whether or not a goal that has been further tailored to the employee's personality will make that individual feel more at ease working toward it.

When a goal is customized to fit a person's actual skills, it will assist them comprehend how they will fit into the longer and wider set of goals as well as the influence and importance of their contribution. This will strengthen their sense of purpose and provide them a reason to justify what and who they are to the organization, which will increase their motivation as they can more easily perceive the connection/bond between themselves, their work, and their contribution.

Also, setting personalized SMART goals can instill confidence in workers since they will be able to deal with others' incorrect expectations of them and won't feel under pressure to meet them. Since the individual won't be stretched beyond their capabilities by corporate expectations, this will also lower the likelihood of turnover.

How may a goal be made more personalized?

The most fundamental phase of any customization is tailoring. Basic physical measurements are used while dealing with physical matters. Similar to how it will fit the employees' soft skills when it is intangible, the measurement procedure. The employee should first be calibrated correctly from the standpoints of both the employee and the goad setter. This can be done by a self-SWOT analysis and following a one-on-one with the employee.

This should be done at the level of cascading the cooperation goals as well. A performance matrix on the employee's talents may be created, and the goals can be customized depending on the matrix. When KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are cascaded from organizational goals to individual performance levels of employees, they may play a significant role in this situation because when goals are more parallel to an employee's capabilities, they feel more specific, realistic, and competitive enough to drive self-motivation.

Having a tailored job description, managers can personalize and customize the JDs at the appointment level itself after properly measuring the employees' abilities and the requirement from the organization's end and by building the link between the common strategic goals with the cascaded down KPIs & set of goals for the employee.

Feedback please! Feedback is one of the most beautiful things that may occur in a motivated and competitive organizational setting. When taking a test, the most anticipated outcome while waiting for the results is the outcome. In a similar vein, staff members look forward to management or higher-ups providing feedback on how they perform in daily tasks. Likewise, if they have displayed outstanding skill while carrying out their regular duties. Feedback can be either good or negative depending on the outcome, but even negative feedback can increase an employee's incentive to improve their skills or pay the attention they need to in order to meet expectations.

Flow of Resources and Support It is crucial to understand that if an employee doesn't feel their boss is supporting them appropriately or that there are appropriate resources around, they won't complete any assignment, regardless of its size, scope, or degree of personalization. Even if you tailor their objectives to exactly who they are and what they are capable of, they won't be able to complete their Degree on time if they lack the necessary material and psychological backing.
